Speed limit cameras have been added for the Carter Elementary, First Presbyterian Day School, Hartley Elementary, Heard <\/span>Elementary, Springdale Elementary, and Windsor Academy, and they will be activated on <\/span>January 4, 2024<\/span><\/b>. Only warnings will be issued for these new zones that month, and full enforcement with tickets will begin <\/span>Monday, February 5, 2024<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameras already \u2013 and will continue to \u2013 enforce the speed limit with tickets for the following school zones: Northeast High & Appling Middle, Rutland Middle & High, Weaver Middle, Westside High, Ballard-Hudson Middle & Ingram-Pye Elementary, and Southwest High.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is great that more schools are eager to help protect the safety of our children by making sure posted speed limits are followed during the school day,” says Lester Miller. “This is about changing people’s behavior, and if you have driven through a school zone the few months, you’ve definitely seen people slowing down.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The cameras actively enforce the speed limit on school days when classes are in session from one hour before the start of school until one hour after dismissal. The start and end times and the enforcement times are below. The flashing lights in a school zone <\/span>only<\/span><\/i><\/b> indicate the reduced limit around the beginning and end of school. The cameras enforce both the reduced speed limit <\/span>and <\/span><\/i><\/b>the regular speed limit in the middle of the day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the camera enforcement, we are able to begin changing people\u2019s behavior, improve everyone\u2019s safety in these areas, and allow our deputies to focus on other issues,” adds Mayor Miller. “Our goal is to have these important safety devices posted at every private and public school in our community.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Citations using the cameras are only issued when a vehicle travels within a school zone more than 10 miles per hour of the posted speed limit. The first citation will be $100, and each subsequent citation will be $150. Money collected from these fines shall only be used to fund local law enforcement or public safety initiatives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These citations will not show up on a person\u2019s driving record nor be used for \u201cpoints\u201d with their insurance. All citations are reviewed by the Bibb County Sheriff\u2019s Office to ensure its compliance with Macon-Bibb\u2019s Code.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
